For many years dCS users all over the world have been asking us to make a disc transport to go with their dCS DACs. Well here it is - the dCS Verdi Encore, successor of Verdi LaScala and Verdi dCS units. The Verdi Encore is two products in one - a CD/SACD transport, and upsampling unit. Every effort has been made to obtain the best possible playback fidelity from both media. Compromising one to favour the other was not an option. We have achieved this by paying attention to the transport as a system, rather than concentrate on one or two specific features. The Encore's low jitter on-board clock ensures that it will give excellent CD playback with non-dCS DACs, but it really comes into its own when used with either the dCS Elgar plus or dCS Delius D/A converters, where the ability to synchronise the Verdi Encore to precision clocks built into the Elgar and Delius takes CD playback to another level. We firmly believe that the quality of playback possible from the DSD layer of SACDs when using the Verdi Encore, is the closest to the original master recording so far achieved with audiophile equipment. This rather bold statement is based on listening tests we have carried out comparing high quality DSD masters made by Turtle Records (using dCS professional converters), with the same tracks on the commercially released SACD. High quality mechanism
The first step in achieving high quality playback is to have a first class disc mechanism. The Verdi uses a dual laser mechanism that not only provides excellent data recovery from CDs, CD-Rs and SACDs, but unlike first generation SACD/CD drives, also gives fast track access with all three media. A smooth acting and structurally rigid drawer type loader allows the Verdi to be located where ever you wish in your audio rack, rather be restricted to the top shelf as would be the case with a top-loader. To provide vibration isolation, the mechanism and drawer assembly are mounted on an elastomer suspension.

Low Jitter On-Board Clock
To ensure that the Verdi Encore will give excellent results when used for playing CDs with non-dCS DACs, it is equipped with a precision on-board clock generator. This has been designed to give an output that has both low jitter and very good absolute accuracy. It utilises technology developed for our dCS 992 Professional Master Clock and employs a high quality Voltage Controlled Crystal Oscillator (VCXO). The VCXOs we use are pre-aged in house at dCS to allow them to relax from manufacturing stresses and then selected for optimum performance. Comprehensive Digital Output Interfaces
The Verdi Encore is equipped with all the commonly used digital interfaces, to ensure that it can be easily connected with other makers' equipment for CD playback. These interfaces are:

• RCA Coaxial
• BNC Coaxial
• Toslink Optical
• AES/EBU
• SDIF-2

An ST optical output is also available to order. These interfaces are built to the same high standards as those on our professional products. Wide bandwidth line drivers are used to prevent the introduction of jitter by slew rate limiting that would occur if lower bandwidth devices were used. You can even use theese outputs for SACD playback, since DSD streem is downsampled by default to PCM and is sent to digital outputs in 16/44.1 format.

Digital Input Interface
The Verdi Encore is equipped with 2 pairs: RCA and AES digital inputs, in order to use Encore as a upsampling unit for external devices giving functionality silimar, however not equal, to Purcel.

Clock Sync Function
One of the problems of using the standard AES/EBU and SPDIF digital interfaces between a CD transport and a DAC, is that the DAC has to extract the clock it needs to synchronise its operation from the incoming data stream. This is in itself not a difficult operation. The difficult part is to obtain a stable clock, as the incoming stream will always contain a certain amount of instability, which is referred to as jitter. There are a number of possible sources of jitter. These can include:

• Instability in the digital source's (e.g. CD transport) clock
• Insufficient bandwidth in the digital source's digital output circuitry
• Poor quality or unsuitable digital cable
• Noise and interference
• Insufficient bandwidth in the D/A converter's digital receiver circuitry

The solution to this is not to try and extract the clock from the incoming data, but to drive the transport and the DAC from the same clock source, which ideally is located within the DAC itself. This is exactly what the Encore's Clock Sync function facilitates when it is used in conjunction with either the dCS Elgar plus or dCS Delius D/A converters. Both DACs have built-in high stability clock generators, which may be enabled via the units' menu systems. One then simply connects the clock cable between the D/A and the Verdi, which then automatically detects the clock and locks to it. The result is a cleaner sound with better defined low level detail. It should be noted that this method of synchronisation is not a new technique. It is standard practise in the professional recording environment and we have been using it to great effect on our professional products since 1988.

IEEE1394 Interface for DSD
When playing the CD or the high resolution layer of SACDs, DSD data is output from the Verdi Encore using a IEEE1394 digital interface. IEEE1394 has been adopted as the official standard for consumer DSD data interchange. The dCS Elgar and dCS Delius D/A converters and the dCS Purcell upsampler are already available with a IEEE1394 interface. The data is encrypted for copyright protection purposes.

Software Upgradable
All of the major digital processing and control functions in the Verdi Encore are performed by programmable logic. These software controlled devices give us the option adding new features or functionality should the need arise in the future. New software can be loaded by simply playing an update CD in the Verdi Encore, in exactly the same way as you would play a conventional CD. It is quick and easy. Many of the new functions we have added to our equipment over the years have been the result of users' suggestions. If you have an idea for an improvement, we'd like to hear from you.

Function Menu
To make the Verdi Encore easy to use and to save cluttering up the front of the unit with unnecessary buttons, only the main controls are located on the front panel. The secondary controls and a large number of additional functions are accessed via the Function Menu. To adjust a secondary control, you simply open the Menu using the Function button, scroll along until the appropriate page is shown on the main display, select the required setting and then let the Menu automatically close. The use of the Function Menu makes it very inexpensive and easy to add additional features or functions to the Verdi by simply changing the unit's operating software. Some of the pages in the Function Menu include:

• SACD/CD layer selection
• Display brightness level selection
• Channel check
• Phase check
• System burn-in signal
• Self test routine
• Software issue number
• Unit serial number
• dCS contact information
• Software update by CD-R
• Factory settings memory

Program Functions
Several useful program functions are accessible via the remote control. These are:

• Play a user's selection of tracks - play once or repeat
• Repeatedly play between two points on a track - useful for listening tests
• Random play

7 Display Brightness Settings
A 7 level brightness control allows the display brightness to be set to match the ambient light level in your listening room. For the purists, it is also possible to switch the display off completely.

Channel check
An easy to use channel identification routine enables you to quickly verify that you have the left and right channels in your system correctly connected. This outputs a synthesised 1kHz digital tone, first on the left channel and then on the right channel. At the same time the main display indicates which channel is being tested.

Phase check
A phase check routine allows you to quickly and easily check the phasing of your speakers. This outputs a pink noise signal that is first in phase on both channels and then inverts the phase on one channel. At the same time the main display shows whether the test signal is in phase, or out of phase.

System burn-in signal
A system burn-in signal enables you to use the Elgar plus to burn-in new items in your system. Having this function and the Channel and Phase checks built into the Elgar plus means that you will no longer have to turn your listening room up-side-down looking for that elusive test CD.

Self test
Every time the Verdi is switched on, it automatically performs a rigorous self test on its digital processing system. A display self test can also be initiated from the Function Menu.

Factory settings memory
This allows all of the Verdi's main system settings to be set in one quick and easy step. This greatly simplifies the initial set-up of the unit and enables you to get on with the important business of enjoying music. If you ever become unsure of what your Verdi's settings are, this feature can be useful to restore the unit to a known set-up state.

Infra Red Remote Support
The Verdi is supplied with an infra-red remote control. This can also be used to operate the dCS Elgar and dCS Delius D/A converters and the dCS Purcell upsampler. The remote control codes top enable the Verdi to used used with a programmable remote control are available by clicking here.

5 Year guarantee
The Verdi Encore, like all dCS audiophile products, is guaranteed for 1 year from the date of purchase. This guarantee may be extended to 2 years, at no extra charge, if the unit is purchased from an authorised dCS dealer and is registered with dCS at the time of purchase. This guarantee is transferable to subsequent owners.

After auditioning the SACDs of Patricia Barber's Modern Cool (Mobile Fidelity UDSACD-2002) and The Zombies' Greatest Hits (Audio Fidelity AFZ001), I thought, "If CDs had sounded like this in 1982, I'm not sure there would ever have been an 'Analog Corner'."
